By Fire Commissioner Robert Beisang
October 25, 2024

We are very excited to share that today MJFD has been awarded $500,000 grant from New York State. The grant application process started Dec 2023 and was finally submitted in March 2024. Thanks to all who contributed to this successful process. The application was for equipment for the safety of our firefighters which includes:

1- "Turnout Gear" (which is personal protective equipment worn by members)

2- SCBA equipment, which is Self Contained Breathing Apparatus for use in IDLH environments.
Described by NIOSH as:

Acute or short-term exposures to high concentrations of some airborne chemicals have the ability to quickly overwhelm workers, resulting in a wide spectrum of undesirable health outcomes that may include irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract, severe irreversible health effects, impairment of the ability to escape from the exposure environment, and, in extreme cases, death.

See the attached Grant award letter from New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services
